We use only the finest hardwoods available and those that are best suited for use as countertops. All of our lumber is kiln-dried then air dried at our shop. All of our hardwood lumber meets the established grades set by the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA).
Our wood options include: American Black Walnut, Hard Sugar Maple, Red Oak, Beech.
Other woods are available, please ask.
edge grain countertops
Edge Grain construction is our most popular option and is the best choice for kitchen & workshop areas that will see heavy use. We use only straight rails in our Edge Grain tops, no end-to-end or finger joints which are more prone to splitting and reduce durability.
face grain countertops
Face Grain, or Plank, countertops are perfect for a top that won't be directly cut on and when the customer wishes to see more of the grain and character of the wood.
End grain countertops
End Grain tops are built using the traditional butcher block style construction. They are best suited for small areas and ideal for use as a chopping block.
It is important to read and understand the following information to get the best out of your new hardwood top. On our end, great care and craftsmanship goes into creating a top that is beautiful and durable. The information provided below will help maintain your top for years to come.
The difference when ordering a top from us is that you will get a finished product made exactly to your specifications. Most countertop suppliers sell standard sizes that require several finishing steps on the part of the customers. Working with us means personalized attention during every step from design to delivery. Our typical production time is 4-5 weeks because each order is custom made in our shop.
It is highly recommended to at least apply a food-grade mineral oil finish especially on orders that ship. If you still want to order an unfinished top, the warranty coverage is limited.
Once your top leaves our shop, it will need to acclimate to its new environment and you may notice slight movement. This is a completely natural occurrence. Typically, the expansion or contraction of the wood will occur along the width and the likelihood increases as the width increases. Once the top acclimates and the moisture content equalizes, it should straighten out. When installing a newly delivered top, you may want to wait a few days for the acclimation to occur. Always allow for natural expansion and contraction of your top once installed.
Extreme humidity or dryness may exaggerate expansion and contraction enough to potentially cause small cracks in the wood. If desired, fill these small cracks with matching wood filler.
